What is Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)?
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom. It recognizes what working adults, apprentices, and veterans already know from jobs, military service, and professional training, and translates their expertise into academic credit.
CPL types recognized under California Title 5, Section 55050 include:
- Military transcripts (military training and service)
- Industry certifications and professional licenses
- Credit by exam (including high school articulation)
- Student-created portfolios documenting skills and experience
- Standardized exams (AP, IB, & CLEP)
This CPL definition does not include knowledge and skills already assessed and awarded credit through formal education at regionally accredited in-state and out-of-state institutions.
