CCSF is dedicated to ensuring the success of our students who have military training, education, or an occupation specialty. We also want to encourage the applications of working adults with industry training or certification. No matter your prior learning experiences, we want to recognize the expertise you already have and make your pathway to a City College certificate or degree easier and faster to achieve.

Request a Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) assessment using:
STEP 1: Apply to City College of San Francisco

You must be a current CCSF student to petition for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).

STEP 2: Submit your official military transcript to the Admissions and Records Office

  • Army, Navy, Marine Corps, & Coast Guard: Order your Joint Services Transcript (JST) through the JST website and have it sent directly to Admissions and Records.
  • Air Force: Order your official transcripts from the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and have it sent directly to Admissions and Records.
STEP 3: Meet with a counselor

If you served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, you should contact the CPL Counselor to review your training and determine whether CPL aligns with your current academic goals.

NOTE: Since CCAF is an accredited college, Air Force transcripts are evaluated by the Office of Admissions and Records. These service members are not eligible for CPL, so they can meet with any academic counselor to discuss how their training fits with their academic goals.

STEP 4: Complete the CPL petition form

Complete and sign the Credit for Prior Learning Petition form. Then ensure you obtain your counselor's signature and they will submit it to Admissions and Records on your behalf.

STEP 2: Contact the CPL Coordinator

  • Check this list to verify that CCSF has a CPL-approved course that aligns with your prior learning experience.
  • If you have work experience that relates to a course we offer but that is not on our approved list, you should still reach out for guidance. Our coordinator will work with the appropriate discipline faculty members on your behalf.
  • Email our CPL Coordinator, Lisa King at [email protected]. Please attach any relevant documentation, if possible. She will determine if CPL may be a good fit for you and guide you through the petition process.
STEP 3: Meet with a CPL counselor

If the CPL Coordinator determines that you may be eligible for CPL, you will schedule an appointment with our counselor to ensure that CPL aligns with your current academic goals. Ultimately, the decision to accept CPL units is up to you, but we want to ensure you are fully informed about their benefits and possible limitations.
