The AS-T (Associates of Science) Transfer Degree in Early Childhood Education

This degree is intended for students who plan to transfer and complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU or articulated private college or university program.

When an "AA" or "AS" Degree has a T after it, it's considered "A Degree with a Guarantee." Students completing the degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major; they may also be guaranteed admission to participating private institutions. A student graduating with an Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education for Transfer (Early Childhood Education AS-T) may transfer to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child and Adolescent Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Communication, Human Services, Liberal Studies or related field.

Another option for those interested in earning a teaching credential are ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Program) Degrees which offer a 60 unit program to complete the Bachelor's and Credential. We partner closely with San Francisco State University's ITEP Programs and Graduate College of Education.

Program Options & Pathway

We recommend you begin with the Associate Teacher Certificate, then choose an area of focus for your next 18 (Infant/Toddler; ECE Practitioner, Inclusive Education) or (Administration) 20 unit Certificate. All of these certificates "stack" to the CDEV AS Degree and the ECE AS-T Degree. That means that short-term certificates are built as building blocks that lead up to the AS and AS-T Degrees.

Completion Requirements

Students who wish to earn the Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education for Transfer (AS-T) must complete 60 semester units of degree-applicable courses with at least a 2.0 grade point average. This must include the units required for full completion of the Cal-GETC curriculum and the units for the major as specified below. Each course in the major must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” (or “P”) or better. Courses used to meet the major requirement may also be used to meet Cal-GETC requirements.

The minimum time for completion is 4 semesters; completion time will vary based on student preparation and number of units completed per semester.

This is the capstone degree in Pathway 1: Early Childhood Education in the Child Development and Family Studies Department. The Associate Teacher Certificate (12 units) and then the other 18-20 unit certificates (Infant/Toddler Care, ECE Practitioner, Administration or Inclusive Education (18-20 units) stack towards the CDEV AS Degree and towards this degree (that means most of the courses in those certificates also count towards this degree).
