General work experience course designed for students considering careers in social justice, public service and the nonprofit sector. Through supervised internships at justice-oriented and community-based organizations, students can increase their skills working with the public sector and their knowledge of career options and pathways, including the skills necessary for work in this sector. A human sexuality course that integrates content and methodology from the disciplines of biology, ethics, health education, history, jurisprudence, LGBTQI+. women and gender studies, psychology, and social justice. Covers the anatomical, physiological and psychological stages of development across the life span, including the role of gender, patterns of sexual arousal and response, and the paraphilias.

A survey of some major world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. An analysis of the origins of these religions as well as their cultural contexts and present-day issues.

Students will review definitions of trauma, identify common traumatic events, and analyze the ways in which trauma experiences affect the health of survivors. Students will discuss diverse approaches to recovering from traumatic events.

Critical assessment of physiological and psychological effects of stress, sources and causes of stress, and health consequences of chronic stress on individuals, communities, and society. Evidence-based techniques to manage and cope with stress, to improve individual and population health.

Introduction to group facilitation skills within the context of treatment for substance use disorder (SUD). Focus will be on group dynamics, interpersonal and intrapersonal process and group facilitation skills. It prepares students for competence in group and family addiction treatment facilitation and to work towards the Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor credential, as required by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP).

It includes an examination of types of trauma, an analysis of the ways trauma affects survivors, an exploration of building resiliency, various approaches to recovery, and person-centered skills to support recovery.

Overview of treatment models used in substance-use disorder and dual diagnosis counseling by Registered Alcohol/Drug Technicians (RADTs)s / Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselors (CADCs). Examination of the different approaches in the treatment continuum for people with substance-use disorders, to explore and experiment with applying approaches in clinical settings. Barriers to integrated treatment will also be appraised.
