Instructor Bio

My name is Ryan Smith and I am a part-time adjunct faculty member at City College of San Francisco.   I have previously taught in Scotland and been a guest lecturer on history for City College Theatre Arts. I have a PhD in Economic & Social History from the University of Glasgow with an emphasis on oil, finance, and globalization.  My main areas of interest are the history and economics of energy, energy transition, finance, modern global history, and the modern Middle East.   In my classes, I unpack the complexities of social change, encourage student engagement through discussion and project-based learning, and provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and improve their critical thinking.
