Nursing care of the geriatric client is emphasized to promote understanding of the core concepts of basic medical-surgical nursing: health and illness, cultural competence and age-appropriate nursing care.

Provides an introduction to basic patient care in the hospital setting with a focus on the following core components of Vocational Nursing: the nursing process, legal aspects of nursing, medical terminology, therapeutic communication, basic bedside nursing care, client teaching, infection control, and basic needs assessment. This course may also serve as a pathway from LVN to ADN degree.

Presents the nursing skills and procedures commonly practiced in Maternity, Pediatric, and Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing including skills related to Community Health Nursing.

This course presents the nursing skills commonly practiced for clients with hematologic, lymphatic, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, endocrine, and genitourinary disorders.

Study of theory in relation to concurrent enrollment in clinical practices and body systems, including hematologic, cardiovascular, respiratory, and immunological. Disorders related to neurological, endocrine, genitourinary, and reproductive systems are also examined, including diagnostic and treatment modalities, and nursing responsibilities. Core nursing concepts include surgical patient care, pain management, and fluid and electrolyte balance.

An introduction to basic concepts of mental health nursing with a focus on current therapeutic interpersonal processes and problem-solving techniques. Study of the identification and treatment of mental health disorders that may be present in acutely ill medical/surgical patients.

Introduction to basic medical-surgical assessment skills as well as the nursing skills commonly practiced for clients with integumentary, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal disorders. This course includes the application of theory and practice of fundamental skills in the skills lab and the clinical area.

Introduction to the basic concepts of pharmacology with emphasis on the principles of pharmacology, medication, calculations, preparation, administration, and storage of medications, and understanding of the actions, side effects, and adverse reactions of different drugs.

Theory and content integrating basic nursing concepts and skills in order to provide safe and competent patient care in a long term care setting. Core components include communication and interpersonal skills, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, promoting patient independence, patient/resident rights, basic nursing skills, personal care skills, mental health and social service needs, care of the cognitively impaired and basic restorative services.

This course offers students an opportunity for continued study of Adobe InDesign with an emphasis on advanced software features and publication design. Class assignments focus on grid-based layout, typographic hierarchy, typesetting, and multi-page documents.
