Common Course Numbering has come to City College!

Starting in Fall 2025, all California community colleges have adopted a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, as a result of Assembly Bill 1111 (Berman, 2021). Common Course Numbering requires that general education and transfer pathway courses at all California community colleges have the same department/prefix, course number, course title, and prerequisites. Additionally, portions of the course description, course content, and student learning outcomes are identical, with individual colleges able to add information to the course description, content, and student learning outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Common Course Numbering

Common Course Numbering is required for all California community colleges by Education Code Sections 66725 - 66725.5 through Assembly Bill 1111 (Berman, 2021).

Students will easily know if they have already completed the CCN course if they attend multiple California Community Colleges. This ability will help students avoid taking a class they've already completed, saving money and time until their degree is earned or they can transfer.

It's also hoped that Common Course Numbering will eventually result in CCN courses receiving the same transferability and Cal-GETC approvals at all California Community Colleges, which will help students when they transfer to a CSU or UC campus.

Yes! AB 1111 requires that Common Course Numbering is "student facing," meaning that the CCN courses will appear in myRAM Portal, College Scheduler, the online schedule, and the College Catalog. CCN courses will only be recognized by their CCN department/prefix and number. Once the CCN course starts, the pre-CCN course is no longer taught.

College Scheduler is the system available in myRAM for class registration.

ARTH C1100, ARTH C1200, and STAT C1000 are required to have different subject codes than what City College currently uses for Art and Mathematics. That's why these subjects appear separately in the online schedule and in College Scheduler.

  • To find all Art classes (ART and ARTH), please look in both the Art and Art History subjects
  • To find all Math classes (MATH and STAT), please look in both the Mathematics and Statistics subjects.

All Common Course Numbering courses will have:

  • a four character prefix (Example: PSYC for Psychology);
  • a "C" (for "Common") identifier before the course number; and
  • four digits for the course number, starting with 1000 and going through 4000.  3000 and 4000 number courses are designated for upper division courses.
  • Example: PSYC C1000

While some City College subjects prefixes currently have four characters, before CCN no credit course numbers had four digits.

No! The pre-CCN course and the CCN course are treated as the same course. Students will get an error message in College Scheduler if they try to register for the CCN course and they have already completed the pre-CCN course with a C or better. Both the pre-CCN course and the CCN course will complete requirements for the degree or certificate and clear prerequisites, so it isn't necessary to take the CCN course if the pre-CCN course has already been completed.

Yes! There are six CCN courses for CCN Phase I starting in Fall 2025, and another seven have been added for Fall 2026. Additional CCN courses will be added after the 2026/27 academic year. This page will be updated as additional CCN courses become effective.

The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) is tasked by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) to develop Common Course Numbering Templates. ASCCC organizes and facilitates faculty participation in the development of the Common Course Numbering Templates. Faculty participation is crucial to the success of Common Course Numbering. California Community College faculty--along with intersegmental discipline faculty from the CSU campuses, UC campuses, and independent California colleges--work together to create the Common Course Numbering templates.

  • For CCN Phase I, more than 600 faculty participated in the June and July 2024 meetings to create the Phase I templates.
  • For CCN Phase II, 153 faculty were appointed to the Common Course Numbering Faculty Workgroups (CCNFWs). Smaller groups were formed for Phase II to create each discipline's CCN templates.
  • For CCN Phase III, CCNFWs met during June 2025 to address all 47 courses across 18 disciplines.
  • All statewide faculty are encouraged to complete pre- and post-convening surveys.

Discipline faculty follow the same processes and procedures to update their CCN courses as they follow to update all other courses. Courses are updated in CurricUNET and are approved by City College's Curriculum Committee, Board of Trustees, and the CCCCO. Instructions, timelines, and guidance will be provided to all discipline faculty revising courses for CCN.
