Instructor Bio

Hi, I'm Leila. I teach composition, creative writing, and literature here at City College. I'm also the coordinator for the Creative Writing certificate. I'm currently an MFA candidate in the Creative Writing program at SF State, so I know what it feels like to be a student.

I taught at City College from 2002 through 2007 and returned in the spring of 2016. Besides teaching English here, I've taught English, rhetoric, and composition at colleges including the University of Pennsylvania, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of San Francisco. I've volunteered with literacy and writing programs like 826 Valencia and Runaway with Words. I also write creatively and professionally and am in contract with my academic writing partner Jennifer Stager for a book titled Public Feminism in Times of Crisis: from Sappho's Fragments to Global Hashtags (for publication in 2022 with Lexington Books).

In my spare time, I spend time with my kids, hang out with my friends, write, and dance as often as possible.

In case you're curious, here is some information about my educational background:

  • B.A., Duke University, English (with certificates in Dance and Film & Video)
  • M.A., University College, London, English (with a concentration in 20th-century American literature)
  • Ph.D. candidate, University of Pennsylvania (researching "amnesia as a narrative principle")
  • M.A., San Francisco State University (I recently finished my thesis titled "Constructions of Plagiarism in Literature [and Implications for Study and Teaching]")
