Departmental Assessment Process
Departmental Assessment Process
The Disabled Students Programs and Services Department (DSPS)
provides educational disability counseling, learning disability
testing and assessment, and hearing screenings as well as many other
services for students with disabilities including sign language
interpretation, real-time captioning, special furniture and adaptive
equipment, adaptive software, testing accommodations, relocation of
classes, and alternate media among other things to students with
disabilities. In addition, the department provides a range of classes
both on and off campus which serve the needs of students with
disabilities. Considering this dual nature, DSPS has Student Services
Unit SLOs as well as Program and Course level SLOs. While students
utilizing DSPS services or attending DSPS classes have a wide
diversity of individual needs, DSPS strives through its SLOs, in
accordance with its Mission
Statement, to measure success in student empowerment and awareness
leading to maximum participation in the college.
Training & Meetings
- The DSPS Department Chair, the DSPS Coordinator, DSPS counselors and DSPS instructors participate in Student Services Division meetings, Flex Day trainings, and other trainings on SLOs.
- DSPS also meets as a department each semester on one of the first Flex days. In these meetings, among other tasks, we share ideas and work on SLOs.
- DSPS counselors meet monthly to discuss department business including its Student Services SLOs.
- DSPS instructors work at the Ocean, John Adams, Chinatown and Mission Campuses as well as at various community-based organizations throughout the city. Therefore, it is challenging to coordinate work on the Program and Course SLOs outside of the FLEX day meetings. Nevertheless, we do get together at least once a semester in addition to FLEX Day. During these meetings, we refine program SLOs and discuss course SLO progress. Each course has a lead instructor assigned to work on coordinating efforts.
What is our process?
- Outcomes are defined and refined for courses, instructional programs, and counseling/services programs.
- Each course and program has a coordinator who leads development of assessment tools, discussion/evaluation of data, and review of needed course or program changes.
Assessment Methods
Assessment methods for programs include:
- Online surveys (surveys, counselors, faculty)
- Banner data (student transcripts and more)
