Finding Materials in the Library

Search CityCat to find books, e-books, disks and more. There are many ways to search, such as Title, Author and Keyword.

Books in the library are organized by call number according to the Library of Congress classification system which groups items by subject, so you can often simply browse the shelves. Examples of Subject searches include: transsexualism, transsexuals, tranvestism, transvestites, gender identity, sex change, sex differences. Relevant areas in the collection to find materials on transgender studies include:

Gale Powersearch is a brand name for 25 multidisplinaryl databases with coverage from 1980 to the present. These databases let you limit your results to articles only from scholarly journals by checking the box "Peer Reviewed publications."  Most useful for transgender topics are the InfoTrac Expanded Academic ASAP, OneFile, and Health Reference Center. Web Resources for General Reference

Use websites for government information, statistics and current events. It's very important to carefully evaluate websites for accuracy, currency, bias and credibility.

glbtq: an Encyclopedia of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer Culture An online encyclopedia edited by two emeriti professors of queer studies.

The GLBT Historical Society The web site for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Historical Society, a San Francisco organization that maintains “One of the world’s largest collections of primary source material about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history.” The museum, archives and reading room in downtown San Francisco are open to the public free of charge 20 hours per week.

Transgender Day of Remembrance. site to people killed because of transphobic violence .

Transgender Forum On-line magazine, updated weekly, with links to transgender community organizations, service providers and vendors .

The Transgender Guide: Transgendered Information, Links, and Resources. Another web page that provides many links.

Transsexuality info: Datenbank über transsexualität Probably the most comprehensive source for links to transgender sites. Don’t let the German scare you. Sites in English have English names. It just takes some looking to find them.

Web Resources for National Organizations

IFGE: International Foundation for Gender Education Advocates for freedom of gender expression, sponsor of annual conference and publisher of “Transgender Tapestry,” the flagship periodical of the transgender community.

International Court . The International Imperial Court System is a social and community service organization with courts throughout the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, and UK dedicated to fabulous gowns and helping those in need.

The Renaissance Gender Association A national association of local support groups with a mission to provide “the very best comprehensive education and caring support to transgendered individuals and those close to them.”

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence The Sisters describe themselves as a 21st century order of queer nuns who consider it their “mission to ‘ruin’ all detrimental conditions including complacency, guilt, and the inability to laugh at one's self” with “their habitual injection of gaiety into serious affairs including human rights, political activism and religious intolerance.”

Transgender Advocacy Coalition News and information about transgender civil rights and political work.

Tri-Ess: The Society for the Second Self An educational, social and support group “for heterosexual crossdressers, their partners, the spouses of married crossdressers and their families.”

Web resources for local organizations

FTM International A volunteer run educational organization serving FTM transgendered people and transsexual men. Although their mailing list is international, the monthly meetings are held in San Francisco. Their links page is a good place to find many more web resources.

LYRIC (Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center) “LYRIC’s mission is to build community and inspire positive social change through education enhancement, career training, health promotion, and leadership development with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth (23 and younger), their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities.”

MadKats. This site features local event listings, especially “Drag, both Kings and Queens…Art, Music and bands.”

TransBay An always current resource guide, social calendar and interactive bulletin board. TransBay also sponsors a drop-in, non-structured get together every 2 nd Wednesday in San Francisco, “just people sipping cappuccinos and talking about everything from physics to dancing to entomology.”

Transgender Law Center . A civil rights organization advocating for transgender communities. They make legal referrals, and advocate for increased acceptance and enforcement of laws and policies that support California’s transgender communities.

Transgender San Francisco A non-profit, membership based organization which serves “the educational, social and recreational needs of gender-gifted people, their spouses, significant others, family members, friends and professionals in the assistive services.”

Youth Gender Project A youth-led organization working to empower and advocate for trans, gender-variant and questioning (TGQ) youth. Focus on TGQ youth primarily in the San Francisco Bay area. Presenter of Genderblast, an annual conference for and by transgender, genderqueer, gender-variant and gender-questioning youth 25 and under, and allies of all ages and genders.
