Travel and Tourism Program

The Travel and Tourism programs cover the important fundamentals needed to work in the many areas of the travel and tourism industry. The program prepares students for employment in companies such as travel agencies, tour companies, cruise lines, and consulate and tourist information offices. 

The program offers an Associate of Science degree with a major in Travel and Tourism with a speciality in either Marketing, Managment or Destination Development. Students can also earn one of four certificates or enroll in indvidual classes.


Associate in Science Degree in Travel and Tourism

Students completing this two-year course of instruction will earn an Associate in Science degree with a major in Travel and Tourism with an emphasis in either Marketing, Management, or Destination Development. Please see degree curriculum for complete details.

The degree curriculum in Travel and Tourism provides practical training in all important areas of the field: industry vocabulary, industry reference books, tour and cruise brochure design, common business practices, airline computer operations, airfare constructions, group sales pricing and special interest tour development.

Completion of the two-year degree will also provide foundation skills in the areas of computer knowledge, written and spoken communications, psychology, anthropology, marketing and management, and knowledge of specific global tourist destinations.

Destination classes focus on travel in specific regions of the world. Students learn about visa requirements, competitive airfares, tour companies that sell specific destinations, and the languages, religious customs, and sightseeing highlights of the region.

Travel and Tourism offers four credit Certificate of Accomplishment programs, each consisting of 15-17 units which can be completed in one year. Please see the Travel and Tourism links in the right side column for program details.

Green and Sustainable Travel


Green and Sustainable Travel Certificate of Accomplishment

Green travel and tourism is one of the fastest growing segments of the travel and tourism industry. All travel related companies have green initiatives in place or are developing them. There is a great need in the industry for employees to understand the requirements of green travel. Students who have completed this certificate will have a clear advantage when entering the workplace. Please see curriculum for required courses and more information.

Please note: the college also offers two Green and Sustainable Business certificates and two Green and Sustainable Business classes.


Travel and Tourism Courses

Travel and Tourism courses provide practical training in specific areas of the industry and can be taken individually, outside of a certificate. All classes are taught at the Ocean Campus.

One textbook is used for both the TRTV 157 and TRTV 159 classes, and one textbook is used for all the destination classes.


Travel and Tourism Jobs

Student completing either the degree or certificate program will be qualified for a variety of positions including reservation agents, marketing representatives, and customer service personnel. Many of the students enrolled in this program are pursuing a second career, so careful evaluation of your current job skills help determine where you can fit into this quickly changing and growing industry.

How to Enroll

It’s easy to start the program. Apply to the college, then register for one or more classes. See the steps to becoming a credit student. You may also contact the Office of Admissions at (415) 239-3285. Please refer to tuition information for specifics on City College tuition costs. Financial Aid is available for those who qualify. You may also call the Financial Aid Office at (415) 239-3577.


Applying for a Degree or Certificate

When you have completed all the required classes, fill out a petition for graduation or a petition for a certificate. The petition form is available in Admissions and Records, Conlan Hall, Room 107, and should be submitted at the beginning of the semester that you complete all the requirements. Petitions must submitted by the deadline posted in the Calendar of Instruction.
