Library Information Technology

What will I learn in this program?

Students learn about library public and technical services.  They learn about library operations and management, about the role of clerks and para-professional support staff as well as the role of professional managers.  Students prepare for entry level employment or advancement as support staff, or to pursue further professional education.  While no special equipment is employed, knowledge of library computer databases and applications, along with specialized services is emphasized.  Because library career advancement is based on experience, the opportunity for internship or field placement is emphasized.

Most library work is subject to direct or indirect public funding.  We are going though a period of diminished public funding at the same time as more demands are being made by our service populations.  Investment in this career must be accompanied by a strong dose of reality testing, a willingness to work on and develop a career based on holding a succession of jobs with increasingly greater responsibility.  At the upper end, Tech Assistant II, Associate and Professional, a willingness to re-locate to other parts of the country can help assure advancement.
