AR133 Art & Assemblage: the Re-Contextualizing of Objects
Instructor James Sansing
Assemblage is an archeological term meaning a group of different artifacts found in association with one another that is in the same context.
In this workshop we will look at artists such as Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Kienholz, Eva Hesse, Alfonso Ossorio, and Bruce Conner, among others. Outsider art will be discussed as related to assemblage. Assemblage is a medium that starts everyone on equal footing, and because of the absence of a measuring stick of talent or advancement in ability, assemblage is the medium of choice by many Outsider artists. Techniques using adhesives, rivets and other methods of fastening will be demonstrated. Materials for the workshop will come from the San Francisco Dump, and will encourage the use of re-claimed objects.
