What will I learn in this program?

The Medical Biller certificate program prepares students to complete medical insurance claims for private physicians and outpatient facilities.  Students learn medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease process, manual and computer bookkeeping, and ICD coding, and manual and computer insurance billing procedures.  Instruction focuses on private insurance, Medi-Cal, Medicare, Worker’s Compensation, and management care plans.  An optional work experience opportunity can be arranged at student request.

Does this program have any special enrollment requirements?

Enrollment is open to all interested students who have completed English 90 or 150 or placed into English 92 or 160 or higher.  Students must complete Business G, H, J. or Math E1 or place in Math 840.  Students need to type 40 NWPM for a five-minute period with a 10 percent error rate or less.

Students who choose to complete the optional work experience will be required to complete a physical exam, provide proof or immunizations, hold a valid CPR Health Care Provider card, and complete a HIPAA Awareness Training and background check.  Students may be subject to alcohol and drug testing for certain facilities.

Does this program have any special costs?

Additional student costs include the internship student identification card, physical exam, immunizations, CPR card, background check, and alcohol and drug tests if required.

How long will it take to complete this program?

The Medical Biller Certificate is designed for a spring entrance with a fall completion.  Students must take 12 to 15 units each semester and pass all courses with a C (2.0) or higher.  Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher to apply for the certificate.
