Preparing materials for outside the classroom

PARTICIPANTS: Barbara Cutten, Malinda Pauly, Sascha Hutchings, Tomi Cunningham, Aimee Yan, Susan Berston, Jeff Goldthorpe, Katryn Wiese, Carole Meagher, Roger King, Chantilly Apollon

NOTES:

ACTIVITY:
-- Reading textbook

ADVANTAGES:
-- Prepares for class: Terminology
-- Allows them to learn what they can on their own, leaving class time for other things they can't get on their own
-- Develops skills for lifelong learning and future educational and work requirements
-- Most students are familiar with this requirement

DISADVANTAGES:
-- Don't do it -- (ESL, Basic Skills, challenged by language or reading skills)

OTHER:
-- Should class have a prerequisite or advisory (doesn't limit entry) -- should all General Education classes have the same basic advisories (H.S.-level English and Math skills)
-- Extra tools to help: SQ3R (sturvey, question, read, recite, review)

************************************************
ACTIVITY:
Assignment (based on reading or something else)
-- Such as give a real-life example
-- Make a connection or do critical thinking
-- Reflective reading -- what was surprising, interesting, new to you, already knew, want to know more about, agree with, don't agree with
-- Common problems that generates in-class group discussion
-- Reading quiz at start of every class

ADVANTAGES:
-- Connection & Critical Thinking
-- Forces accountability
-- Improves quality of reading

DISADVANTAGES:
-- Can bypass/"skate" by 'Parrot'
-- Some people didn't do it

OTHER:
-- Accountability

**************************************************************
ACTIVITY:
-- "Survival Cards" -- whatever students write on card are notes they can use on exam day
-- Vocabulary cards --
-- Concept maps -- list of terms that they have to connect
-- Videos to show context to inspire them to read more...
-- LINKS to videos and tutorials -- ADVANTAGES: -- Different modalities
-- INSIGHT -- Discussions before class takes place -- but happens all last minute... Have to alter pattern for when things are due...

**********************************************************
ACTIVITY:
-- Video (textbook supplies)
"OTHER" -- closed-captioning
YouTube closed-captioning option --
@ONE-accessible classes -- MUST be closed-captioning
