ESL 69 Accent Improvement (3)
Credit, Degree Applicable
Improvement in standard American English pronunciation with emphasis on accent reduction, by improving overall clarity, voice quality, and physical presentation. Recommended for ESL 140
, 150, 160 students with pronunciation problems.
Students with severe pronunciation problems should enroll in ESL 49
before taking ESL 69.
Students must register for a lecture section of ESL 69 and a lab section at the same time.
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Outcome 1: Speaking 1. Identify, interpret, and produce correct a. Statement and question intonation b. Sentence stress and sentence focus, word stress, and rhythm c. Phrasing and linking d. Articulation of sounds 2. Analyze own oral production in class and in recordings, identifY common errors, and correct. 3. Manage breathing, volume, tongue/mouth position, and projection for improved intelligibility 4. Interpret and produce voice tone and register appropriately for academia and life skills. 5. Select appropriate posture, movement, and eye contact for effective communication in a variety of formal & informal settings. B. Listening
- Outcome 2: Listening 1. Discriminate between similar-sounding words or phrases, applying knowledge about word and sentence stress, intonation, vowel length, articulation, and other segmental (e.g. rice v.lice) and suprasegmental (message v. massage) clues. 2.
