An introduction to the Bible in English--one of Western culture’s most influential books and an important source for literature--through a study of its literary aspects, interpretative methods, and historical context.
No part of the ENGL 48 series is prerequisite to any other part.
Offered on occasion
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Outcome 1: Demonstrate awareness of the original languages, canonization, translations, and history of the Bible in English.
- Outcome 2: Distinguish between the types of literature, historical periods, sources, themes, and textual concerns of the various parts of the Bible.
- Outcome 3: Analyze the content, themes, and formal structures of biblical books, stories and texts using standard forms of biblical criticism and interpretive methods.
- Outcome 4: Integrate textual evidence and historical and literary criticism when writing essays on key books and passages in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
