An introduction to microbial diversity and environmental microbiology. Topics include: microbial cellular architecture, metabolic diversity, biogeochemistry, bioenergetics, and growth; population and community dynamics; ecosystem health; water and soil microbiology; and microorganisms in biodeterioration and bioremediation. The laboratory will emphasize methods used to analyze and detect microbial contamination in environmental samples.
