CHEM 208A Organic Chemistry (4)

The first semester of a one-year course in organic chemistry for students not majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. CHEM 208A/208B is designed for students majoring in the life sciences, including premedical students.

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Outcome 1: Name and write the structures of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and ethers.
- Outcome 2: Use structure, chemical bonding, and intermolecular attractions and repulsions to predict polarity, dipole moments, boiling point trends, solubility, and reactivity.
- Outcome 3: Apply conformational analysis and principles of stereoisomerism to all organic compounds.
- Outcome 4: Predict the product of organic reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, and substitution and elimination reactions.
- Outcome 5: Write detailed mechanisms for addition reactions to alkenes and alkynes, substitution and elimination reactions, and reactions of alcohols and ethers.
- Outcome 6: Identify the structure of organic compounds on the basis of reactions and spectroscopic analysis.
- Outcome 7: Set up and use classical organic laboratory techniques, microscale techniques, and laboratory instrumentation such as gas chromatographs, infrared spectrophotometers, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers
