Overview of the unique characteristics and needs of young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The role of the paraprofessional in an exceptional needs setting will be examined. Early intervention strategies will be emphasized.

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Outcome 1: Describe current diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders.
- Outcome 2: Define Autism Spectrum Disorders, including causes, symptoms and common misunderstandings.
- Outcome 3: Examine current theories of intervention and controversies surrounding ASD assessment and diagnosis.
- Outcome 4: Inventory resources for families.
