1. Fantastic play “On the Hill” coming to Mission Campus!

On the Hill is an extremely moving play that tells the story of the life and death of one of our City College students, Alex Nieto, killed on Bernal Hill in a hail of 59 police bullets. The play weaves together the words of Alex’s mother and father, testimony given at Alex’s federal civil rights trial, and the words of the actors themselves, who recount their own personal experiences of what it is like to grow up in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.

The play and its talented actors are bi-lingual and bi-cultural, and the drama is sparked by live music. The director is the dynamic Paul S. Flores, a novelist, hip-hop poet, lecturer at USF, and co-founder of Youth Speaks.

Our City College students will hear their lives reflected, and will learn about the ongoing organizing for Amor y Justicia for Alex. They will leave feeling affirmed and hopeful, and will be talking about the show for weeks. This bi-lingual play will be well understood by students who have at least a beginning grasp of English.

The production is sponsored by the Mission performance group Loco Bloco. This showing is endorsed by the Diversity Collaborative and Save City College.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, November 3 at 7 pm in room 109 (Mission Campus). The performance will start at 7:15 and go until approximately 8:30 pm, followed by 15 - 30 minutes of questions and discussion with the members of the performance team.

Please bring your class if you can and announce the event if your class is scheduled at another time. Encourage your students to go; it will be a great experience for them!
