How does CareerMatch work?

CareerMatch identifies your interests using the popular Holland Code. Dr. John Holland, a well-respected career development expert who created the Holland Code Career Model (1985), says that people can be loosely classified into six different personality categories. CareerMatch uses this theory to identify your two strongest categories as part of a process to help you plan a satisfying career path.

What does the CareerMatch Survey assess?

CareerMatch targets your interests, not your abilities.  Although you may find a lot of enjoyment participating in certain activities, this does not mean you will be good at them. You may need to take other assessments to identify your abilities for a specific occupational area.

How much can I rely on CareerMatch to guide me to future career and college pursuits?

Don't rely on CareerMatch for definitive answers, as it is not an exact science.  It was designed to help you generate ideas you hadn't already considered. Never rely on one isolated test or survey to tell you what to do with your life. Take advantage of the many resources available to assist you in making career and educational decisions. Remember that CareerMatch does not replace a counselor’s professional guidance.

I took the survey, but didn’t agree with the results…

That’s okay. Let your own judgment and intuition guide you. Nobody knows better than you which direction to take. Don't limit your vision if the results don't "fit." CareerMatch contains information about 100+ CCSF Career and Technical Education programs, so explore any program that seems interesting to you. The more information you have, the better prepared you will be to make an informed decision.
