Community Health Worker (CHW)

What is the Community Health Worker Certificate?
It is a 17-unit Certificate of Achievement which will prepare you to work as a CHW in health clinics and outreach programs. This program is supportive of working mothers and those working full-time, as well as for individuals who speak English as a second language. The Community Health Worker Training Program is jointly sponsored by City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University.

What do Community Health Workers (CHWs) do?
CHWs provide health advising, information, and referrals, carry out client orientation and intakes, and advocate for client and communities. They work under some 30 titles, such as Community Health Advisor, Health Worker, Public Health Aide and Community Health Outreach Worker.

How much can I earn in this career?
The starting salary for a Health Worker I at the San Francisco Department of Public Health is $33,748-40,898 with full benefits. CHWs who work for community-based organizations generally make somewhat less. Please refer to the Occupational Outlook Handbook for more information regarding job outlook and salary scales.

How long will the program take?
Full-time students can complete the Certificate in two semesters. Most people in the program work full-time and therefore take more time to complete the program.

Where will classes be held?
Most classes will be held at City College Phelan Campus (Ocean and Phelan Ave.). Check the Schedules for Credit Classes for a listing of class times and locations.

What time of day are classes offered?
All required classes are held after 4pm. During the second semester, if you are not already a CHW you will need to be available for field placement several hours per week during business hours. Are there prerequisite courses?
A student who has not previously worked as a Community Health Worker must complete our short-term prerequisite course Health 59: Introduction to Community Health Work with a final grade of "C" or higher. Existing CHWs should call our office for a waiver application.

How much money can I expect to spend?
