What is the Writing Lab?

The City College of San Francisco Writing Lab offers tutoring and other writing resources to City College students.
  • Our staff of peer and faculty tutors works with you one-on-one at any stage of the writing process, from understanding an assignment to planning an outline, from supporting your thesis to revising your draft.
  • Tutors help you work through difficult parts of the writing process and act as readers who provide constructive feedback.
  • Because our goal is to help you become a more independent and confident writer, we will not proofread or correct your essays for you; instead, we will help you develop strategies to improve your writing and to locate and correct your own errors.
  • Tutoring sessions are drop-in and are limited to 30 minutes per day, up to twice per week.
  • If you are interested in working specifically on grammar and proofreading, visit the Grammar Table. Find out more by downloading the Writing Lab overview handout, above.

Making the most of your tutoring session:

  • Bring handouts and other written information about your assignment or writing task.
  • Bring any readings that relate to the writing you are working on.
  • Bring your draft and/or any prewriting notes.
  • Think about an aspect of your writing (thesis, development, organization, transitions, etc.) that you most want to discuss with a tutor. (In a 25-minute session, there is only time to discuss one or two related issues.)
  • If your instructor has already provided written comments, review them, bring them with you, and be prepared to discuss those that you don't understand.
  • If you have a referral form for the Writing Lab, read the specific information on it so that you are prepared for the focus of your session.
  • Leave enough time to revise your writing after you complete your tutoring session and before the assignment is due.
  • If tutors are helping others and not immediately available, use the wait time productively to work on your writing or review handouts and handbooks available in the Lab.
  • Get involved in the session. Take notes about changes that you want to make in your writing; ask the tutor questions.
  • Leave your session with a clear plan for what you are going to do next: write it down!
