While keeping distinctive features of earlier versions of LangLab, LangLab PASSPORT Version 2.2 offers several improvements in response to users’ suggestions.

1. Review of LangLab PASSPORT features

  • LLP turns any computer lab into a language lab

  • LLP allows real time monitoring of students via its MONITOR module

  • LLP allows asynchronous insertion of targeted feedback in students’ oral work at any place in their recordings for practice, homework , and exams – via its TEACHER module.

  • LLP is simple to use for instructors as well as students: creation of multimedia, multimodal Items and Lessons is easy –via the ADMIN (Authoring) module. In fact, LLP strives to avoid confusing and discouraging teachers with too wide an array of possibilities. Students will recognize the familiar interface of their music players and recorders.

  • LLP is a multimedia tool: items can be created using a multiplicity of prompts: text, image, audio-recording, video-recording, PPT presentation, any URL.

  • LLP Is a cross-platform software (Windows, Mac, Linux etc.)

  • LLP can be used for distance learning as well as instruction in labs and classrooms.

  • LLP allows student pairing and group work, monitored or not.

  • LLP tracks students’ progress, time spent on tasks.

  • LLP’s website at http://www.elanglab.com describes the different modules.
Best is to first look at the “How it works” section at http://www.elanglab.com/testlanglab/features/features.htm, with its screen shots.  Or watch Camtasia Studio videos with audio commentary at http://www.langlab.co.uk/passport_live.html (produced by LLP’s English distributors), which show how easy it is to use LangLab PASSPORT modules.

And…
  • LLP is inexpensive.

2. LangLab PASSPORT’s new features

  • In the ADMIN (Authoring) Module, teachers can now configure the text window as they would with a word processing software (types and sizes of fonts; text and background colors etc.)

  • It is easy to change the order of items in a lesson, add an item at any place in a lesson, or delete any item of a lesson.

  • It is easy to modify the student roster as enrollment typically changes in the first weeks of a term.

  • It is easy to create a checkbox, or answer boxes of any size.

  • It is possible to print students’ written answers.

  • It is possible to test that a link to a URL will function when students click on it in the CLIENT module.

Two final notes
a. LLP is proud to be the only software of its kind to  have received top marks in all categories in IALLT’s Digital Language Lab Solutions, 2nd Edition Edited by Jack Burston

b. To High School Teachers: LangLab PASSPORT is a very convenient tool to use for the Speaking Section of AP Exams, and thus also for preparing students for it.  This is particularly true of the newer exams for Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese that are based on ACTFL’s IPA (Integrated Performance Asessment.)
