SWALLT at CALICO 2006
- by Harold Hendricks, Brigham Young University
The annual CALICO Symposium for 2006 was held at the
University of Hawai'i at Manoa and featured one of our own SWALLT
members as the keynote speaker. Keola Donaghy, Assistant Professor of
Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, spoke on "The
Hawaiian Language: From the Brink to the Cutting Edge" to about 250
attendees at the opening plenary session. His talk detailed how he
joined with others to develop both a digital Hawaiian library and an
on-line Hawaiian language course to promote the renaissance of the
Hawaiian language. He has been one of the prime developers of online resources for both instructors teaching Hawaiian in the islands and
students learning on their own around the world. His presentation
highlighted an innovative and successful use of technology to not
only teach, but to preserve and expand a language that was
approaching extinction.
Other presentations by SWALLT members included:
- A pre-conference workshop by Peter and Barbara Lafford, Arizona State
University, on "Digital Editing and Podcast Production."
- A pre-conference workshop by Danielle Allard and Mimi Yu: "Language
Teaching with Impact using PowerPoint and Camtasia."
- Jerry W. Larson and Harold H. Hendricks: a session on "Creating an Online, Contextualized Grammar Diagnostic Exam."
- Fuqiang Zhuo (Joe) of UC Davis: a session describing the "Meta-
Analysis of the Current Five-Year Research Studies in the CALICO
Journal."
SWALLT commercial member Auralog was a busy spot in the exhibit hall.
