Ms. Argenti has been teaching music at CCSF for over twenty-five years. Her
educational goal is to share her knowledge and experience in the field of
vocal performance as well as instill a love of music and learning in her
students. She encourages students to discover their vocal potentials and to
be a support group to their classmates.
As a singer Ms. Argenti has performed Renaissance and Baroque music with
ensembles Fioretti Musicali and Muses Delyte and studied and performed
Italian and Spanish art song in Italy and Switzerland. She was a founding
member of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and has, for many years, been
performing Parlour Music of America and England with Madeline Mueller, chair
of the music department. She is on the board of directors of some Bay Area musical ensembles, including Chanticleer and Avedis.
SCUBA diving, gardening, and traveling are some of Ms. Argenti's interests.

Carlson, Lenny

Lenny Carlson teaches History of Jazz and Guitar Improvisation Workshop and directs the Wednesday Afternoon Stage Band. A composer, arranger, guitarist and author, he is an eclectic artist equally influenced by Jazz, classical and folk music from around the world.
Mr. Carlson has recorded both original jazz compositions and arrangements and jazz influenced, original classical works. He has produced two critically-acclaimed jazz albums of his original guitar music, Search for the Floor and In the Mud. One selection from his second recording was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Composition. He has been associated with John Carter, Don Preston, Betty O’Hara, Gary Barone, Larry Blackshere, Bill Douglass, Barry Green and other well-known artists over a professional career of more than 3 decades.
Mr. Carlson has composed music for videos, video games, concert performances and live theater. In 2005, he composed and performed original music for two Stanford University productions: Harold Pinter’s The Lover and Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself. Daddy, S. Kwaku

Kwaku Daddy has been teaching at CCSF since 1983, and is a member of the Recording Academy, a five-time winner of the ASCAP Awards for music, a consultant on African and world music to the California elementary and secondary schools, the California State university system, and the California junior college system.
Daddy has also taught and conducted master percussion workshops at San Francisco State University, the Conservatory of Music, Southern U, Bakersfield College and at the College of the Redwoods. He has released seven albums and has written several musical pieces including "The African Concerto," currently being performed by numerous symphonies across the state of California. He is also the author of the text "The Folklore of Ghana."
Daddy has recorded, performed and co-headlined with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Randy Weston, Santana, John Handy, Quincy Jones, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Third World, the Paul Winter Consort and has conducted workshops with the legendary Johnny Otis. He has also performed his African Concerto with the Santa Rosa, Sacramento, the El Camino and the Bakersfield symphonies.

Davis, Bob

During Bob's professional career he has performed in Moscow, composed for Kronos String Quartet, designed sound for the film Vegas in Space, edited books on the San Francisco punk scene, written his own solo show, Banjo, and published interviews with a seventy-year-old female impersonator. He has twice been included in Who's Who America's Teachers, putting him in the 2% included in more than one edition.
A part-time instructor and full-time "freeway flyer," he also teaches music at Solano Community College in Sonoma County and sound design for theater at San Francisco State University. He has taught music at City College since 1976.

Dilworth, Helen J.

Dr. Dilworth combines teaching with a successful career as a solo vocalist. She enjoys helping her students to sing the songs they choose, based upon their desires and needs. Dr. Dilworth is able to provide guidance based upon the collective wisdom of the wide range of experts with whom she has studied. Her methods allow students to develop their technique and expression and perform "better, faster and longer."
Nicknamed "Dr. Diva" by retired CCSF President Dr. Willis Kirk, Dr. Dilworth has taught in many venues, including community colleges, universities, conservatories, Young Audiences, singing teacher's organization, musician's associations, California Touring Artists, private lessons, vocal seminars, gospel workshops and choral clinics.
As a singer, she has performed in the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Austria and Puerto Rico.

Mr. Enciso is a lecturer on the music of Wagner, Richard Strauss and Schubert. He is also an orchestral and choral conductor, and a member of the Music Teacher’s Association of California. He is a specialist in ear-training, sight-singing, harmony, counterpoint and piano pedagogy. Mr. Enciso studied symphonic conducting and advanced music theory and analysis with Michael Senturia.

Fergus, Brian

Mr. Fergus is a composer and performer of electronic music. He often works in mixed media, composing and performing music for dance, film and theater arts.

Ferrara, Lawrence

Distinguished as a teacher and performer, Lawrence Ferrara is the first guitarist to receive a master's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has taught previously at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Sonoma State University and in addition to being a full time professor at City College of San Francisco he also teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he teaches guitar, ensemble and pedagogy.
Mr. Ferrara has performed major recitals in San Francisco, Toronto, Barcelona, Los Angeles and at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. He has served on the Music Advisory Panel to the National Endowment of the Arts and is the author and performer of a sequence of music books titled The Student Repertoire Series for Guitar Vol. 1 and 2, with accompanying CD's, published by Guitar Solo of San Francisco. He has a solo CD of American Guitar Works on the VGo label and Mr. Ferrara won the California Virtual Campus (CVC) Award in 2004 for the Best Online Teaching Website for his online course in music appreciation. Gorham, Peggy

Ms. Gorham loves the human interaction that develops within the community of a class setting. She appreciates most the student comments made about her enthusiasm for teaching music. Her goal is to challenge students in an atmosphere of fun.
Ms. Gorham has been teaching at CCSF since 1973 and has been a full-time faculty member since 1981. She has taught elsewhere, including Cal State, East Bay; but she much prefers the diversity found in the urban environment of City College.
She has been a musical theater director serving as vocal coach, conductor and pianist for companies such as Magic Theater and 42nd St. Moon. MS. Gorham has also been the accompanist for the San Francisco Bach Choir and the American Ragtime Ensemble.
Ms. Gorham has served for six years on the campus-wide Curriculum Committee. She has a passionate interest in attending theater and film.

Hubbell, Judy

Ms. Hubbell has served on the Music Faculty and taught Studio Voice at the College of Notre Dame de Namur, Sonoma State University, Wagner College in NY, and MCCC in Arkansas. She has also served as President of the Bay Area Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and at CCSF as Musical Director and Artistic Director of City Summer Opera. She has been full-time at CCSF as Music Faculty since 1991 and Supervisor of the CCSF Music Mentoring Program since 1999.
Ms. Hubbell’s professional singing career in New York as a soprano included singing and touring extensively in performances of Renaissance and Baroque music with the New York Pro Musica and the Bach Collegium of NY. She sang leading operatic roles at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, The Caramoor Festival in NY, Theatre Recomier in Paris, and the Corfu Festival in Greece. After moving to the Bay Area, she became involved in the creative process of singing many American and World Premieres with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Berkeley Contemporary Players, New and Unusual, Earplay, CCRMA at Stanford, and Composers Inc. She has also sung with the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra and had engagements in major halls in the USA, South America, and Europe. Educational and Performance Grants have included the Rockefeller, the NEA, and the Djerassi Foundation.
As Supervisor of The Music Mentoring Program since 1999, Ms. Hubbell has worked closely with her advanced students, pianists, and mentors to help develop a real singing community in her classes. The program targets the beginning singer, while allowing intermediate and advanced students the opportunity to grow as mentors. She continues to study languages and many other subjects at CCSF; and loves to walk and explore the Bay Area.

Kamatani, Pamela

As a music historian, Dr. Kamatani has specialized in the music of the Baroque period, and the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, in particular. She is also a pianist with an extensive teaching and accompanying experience. Although she has taught at institutions ranging from San Quentin State Prison to UC Berkeley, she especially enjoys City College, where she has the opportunity to teach a wide variety of
courses, including Music Appreciation, Musicianship, Harmony, and Piano. She relishes approaching music from different angles, and connecting with students at all levels.

Mr. Law has been teaching at CCSF since 1972. His specialties include Solo Voice, Music Theory, Choir, East Asian Music and Piano. He has been chair person of Asian Studies Department and a member of the executive council of the Academic Senate for many years. Joshua is an active member of Asian & Pacific Islander American Student Success (APASS). He is also currently serving as faculty advisor of World Music Club and Chinese Culture Club of CCSF. He produces the popular twice-yearly World Music Showcase Concerts and Karaoke contests for many years. These concerts and contests have always been extremely well supported by the CCSF community as well as citizens of San Francisco.
Mr. Law is a well-known speaker in conferences and workshops on music in the US and also abroad in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Brazil, as well as S. E. Asia and Europe. He performs regularly as a Baritone soloist in concerts, directs choral/orchestral concerts and many music and video productions. He has served for over 20 years in four local Christian churches as music and worship director. He is active in many professional organizations such as MENC (Music Educators National Conference), NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing, ACDA American Choir Directors Association, MACCC (Music Association of California Community Colleges) and FACCC (Faculty Association of California Community Colleges). He is serving on the boards of CPAA (Chinese Performing Artists of America) and CGST (China Graduate School of Theology) .
Mr. Law published J. Law's Music Slide Rule, Insight Press, 1995, and A Study Guide to Music of East Asia, McGraw Hill, 1992. Lim, Benedict

Benedict Lim holds degrees from Towson State University, and the
University of Maryland, Baltimore County with the concentration in
Ethnomusicology. His graduate thesis, "The Dance Drum of Central Java as Played
by Pak Minarno" was under the mentorship of Dr. Mantle Hood. He
specializes in South East Asian Music and Music of East Asia. He was a
research associate for the City of Oakland, Cultural Arts Division and D.C.
Commission on the Arts. He has been the Director of Music City Academy of
San Francisco. He has presented papers in national and international
conferences and has publications in numerous journals. Mr. Lim has
articles in City of Oakland, Cultural Arts Division publication and has
produced a documentary film, "Chinese Percussion in New York City". He is
also a contributing specialist in the area of Indonesian music for a high
school textbook, "Music! It's Role and Importance in Our Lives",
(Glencoe Division, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill).

Mauleon-Santana, Rebeca

Lauded by critics as the “First Lady of Latin Jazz,” pianist, composer, author and educator Rebeca Mauleon-Santana has been a fixture in the Bay Area as well as international Latin and world music scenes for over two decades. As one of very few women composer/band-leaders in her field, she has also performed and recorded with a Who's Who of luminaries including Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Steve Winwood, Mickey Hart, Joe Henderson and Israel López “Cachao,” garnering several Grammy nominations. Her most recent solo recording is entitled Descarga en California on the Universal label.
Ms. Mauleon-Santana is the author of several critically-acclaimed texts on Latin and Caribbean music, including the Salsa Guidebook, 101 Montunos and Muy Caliente, as well as articles in top music magazines such as JazzTimes, Keyboard, Modern Drummer and Mix Magazine. McCarthy, Charlie

Mr. McCarthy has taught woodwinds privately and at CCSF for over 20 years. He has also coached sax soloists and sections at Stanford, College of San Mateo and Sonoma State College.
He has performed with many of the greats in Jazz, including Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Lovano, James Moody, Sarah Vaughn, Louie Bellson and Lena Home.
He continues to perform in Big Bands, Jazz combos, recording sessions and with the San Francisco Symphony Pops orchestra.

Mueller, Gerald

Jerry Mueller developed and directed the electronic music studio, organized an early music group and sponsored a composer’s collective consisting of City College composition class graduates, all at CCSF. His compositions have been performed by various groups -- among others in the Bay area, the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra and the San Francisco Choral Artists -- and include numerous art songs, choral works, piano and organ pieces, several soundtracks for short films, and the incidental music for, at last count, nine dramatic productions. Currently he teaches music theory at CCSF.

Ms. Mueller is a pianist and chamber musician. She has premiered many modern compositions.

Ms. Pang is Organizer of the Cultural Program of the San Francisco Moon Festival and has performed on radio and television.

Tartak, Marvin

Dr. Marvin Tartak is a musician who specializes in two areas-- as a music historian and as a concert pianist. He has contributed articles to Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 6th, and the forthcoming 7th edition, Grove's Dictionary of Opera, 1992, Music and Letters, Notes, and Piano and Keyboard. In 1982 he edited a set of 24 piano pieces by Rossini, Quelques Riens, for the new, complete edition of that composer's music published by the Fondazione Rossini in Italy. In 1995 a second volume appeared, this time a collection of 18 Italian songs. In 2002 a third volume, this time of miscellaneous piano music, will be finished for the same publisher.
He gives lectures to the San Francisco Opera Guild and the San Francisco Opera. As a performer he has concertized in Germany (debut recital in Berlin, 1956, during a year as a Fulbright Scholar), the United States, Canada and Central America, often as accompanist to Betty Allen, mezzo-soprano. For twenty years he was a pianist with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
Beginning in 1998 he has contributed over 20 reviews of opera, symphony and chamber music for the Internet journal, "San Francisco Classical Voice."

Townsell, Frank

Mr. Townsell has taught at CCSF for the past fourteen years.
In his classes, he wants to impart to students a love of music through the piano, with the idea that everyone can learn to play and become a musician, once the basic principles are understood. He feels that every student is unique and that one must have a flexible attitude in class. Mr. Townsell's students have told him that he has a lot of patience.
Mr. Townsell has published a CD of the piano music of John W. "Blind" Boone, a blind African American musician (1864-1927).
Collecting records and books about music, yoga, historical African-Americana, movies, music research are some of his extracurricular activities.
