Intensive Chinese Language Program

June 12 - July 12, 2008




Group Departure : You will leave the US on June 14th or from San Francisco International Airport and fly to Beijing, arriving on the 15th.

Beijing Arrival : You will arrive in Beijing in the evening of June 15th and be transferred from the airport to the ICEC where you will check into your accommodations at the BUPT. You will be greeted ad given a brief orientation tot he dorm and dining facilities on campus.

Accommodations are located in a modern, air-conditioned building near the campus, with two participants sharing each room. Each room has a T,V. and a private bathroom with hot water available 24 hours/day. Convenient laundry facilities are located on each floor inside the building. Students may bring their own laptops and access broadband internet services on campus; every apartment has an internet connection.

Orientation : On the morning of June 17th you will have an orientation to classes and then a city tour of Beijing. In the evening you will have a welcome dinner.

Placement Test : In the morning of June 18th you will be given a placement exam.

Classes Start/Acrobatic Show : Classes will begin on June 19th. The evening of the 22nd there will be an acrobatic show and dinner, where you will be treated to a show consisting of juggling, Chinese yo-yo, feats of equilibrium, plate spinning, leg and foot juggling, rolling cups and contortion, bungee jumping, trapeze artists, bicyclists and more.

Excursion to Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City: On June 23rd you will take an excursion to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, and then in the evening will be treated to a Peking Duck Dinner. Tiananmen Square is located at the center of the city, and is home to Tiananmen Tower, the Monument to People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall. Thousands of people visit the square each day. The Forbidden City was once the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties, which lasted for more than five centuries.. It houses numerous rare treasures and curiosities and was designated by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987.

Classes Continue : June 25-29, classes at the ICEC continue.

Excursion to the Great Wall : On June 30, the group will take an excursion to the Great Wall, which is considered to be one of the greatest wonders of the world. Like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus. The Great Wall is the world's longest man-made structure, stretching over a formidable 6,352 km (3,948 miles),

Classes Continue/Houhai and Houtong Tour : Classes will continue July 2-6. On the 6th, the group will take a Houhai and Houtong tour, including dinner.

A hutong is an ancient alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs number into the several thousand. The word hutong comes from the Mongolian hottog meaning "water well". During the growth of towns and cities, wells dug by villagers formed the centres of new communities.

In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan, traditional courtyard residences. Many neighbourhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong, and then joining one hutong to another. The word hutong is also used to refer to such neighbourhoods.

Houhai is in the center of the traditional hutong area of central Beijing.

Excursion to Summer Palace : On July 7, the group will take an excursion to the Summer Palace. The Summer Palace covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is water. In its compact 70,000 square metres of building space, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace an "outstanding expression of the creative art of Chinese landscape garden design, incorporating the works of humankind and nature in a harmonious whole."

Classes Continue : Classes will continue July 9-12.

Graduation Ceremony : On July 13, students will participate in a graduation ceremony, including a farewell dinner.

Return to the US : Today you will be transferred to the airport and leave China for San Francisco, arriving the same day.
