Metro Transfer Academy of Health, Education, and Social Services

Metro Transfer Academy of Health, Education, and Social Services is a personalized educational home for students who want to graduate with an associate’s degree, smoothly transfer to university, and become leaders in their communities. The theme of this academy is Health, Child Development and Social Services. The academy’s course pathway prepares students going into a wide variety of social science-based majors, for example Education; Sociology; Child & Adolescent Development; Urban Studies; Political Science; Psychology; Public Health and many more. All Metro core courses satisfy the transfer requirements for the CSU and UC systems.   

Metro students take two or more courses together each semester over four semesters, building strong ties among peers, faculty and counselors.

Sergio R. Martinez, MPH

Sergio R. Martinez, MPH , has been coordinating the Metro Transfer Academy of Health at City College of San Francisco since January 2015. Mr. Martinez teaches the first year experience class.  He uses various teaching modalities to reach vulnerable groups and in building rapport with marginalized communities. He believes meeting students where they are in life and acknowledging their experiences is key to building healthy sustainable relationships and in creating great learning environments. His public health work stems back over 15 years in local government and research. During his spare time he writes blogs for East Oakland Building Healthy Communities Initiative and freelances for the Oakland Tribune. His most recent stories have included profiles on the best taco trucks in East Oakland, urban gardening and Oakland’s Mayoral elections.
