Hidden Gems: Great Movies No One Has Ever Seen

Register Now

Many great movies never make it into American theaters. We see only see a small fraction of what Europe produces, and we don’t necessarily see the best. Even quality American films are often held up because of marketing concerns: A film will fall through the cracks when it doesn’t clearly fit a single advertising category, or a distributor will lose its nerve because a subject is deemed too daring. Mediocre films invariably find a market, while quality often goes begging.

In this course, we will screen six great films you have never seen, that have never been released in our area. In some cases, these films were never even released in this country. They are entertaining, eye-opening movies that give a window into their respective cultures, foreign and domestic. Why weren’t they released? What scared away the distributors? Featured stars will include such luminaries as Sophie Marceau, Monica Bellucci, and William H. Macy. We will screen films and show clips from the United States, Chile, France, Italy, China and other nations.

*The class will consist only of films that Mick LaSalle has never shown in any previous City College class.
