Instructor Bio

Since 2016, I have been teaching nutrition and human biology courses through the Biology Department at CCSF.  Previously, I was Deputy Director of the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG) and a Staff Scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) in Oakland, California. Before living in the Bay Area, I was in Geneva, Switzerland working as a Senior Associate and Senior Technical Advisor to the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), focusing on maternal, infant and young child nutrition. I also worked in Geneva as a Technical Officer at the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, managing the WHO Database on Body Mass Index. Earlier, I was an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I also lived in Japan, where I was an assistant professor (助手) in the Department of Applied Nutrition at Tokushima University School of Medicine in Tokushima.

I received my PhD in Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis with a designated emphasis in international nutrition. My research focused on the relationship between micronutrient status and consumption of animal-source foods in Kenyan school children. My interests include maternal, infant and young child nutrition, micronutrients, food-based strategies for addressing micronutrient deficiencies, and nutrition education.
