Criminal Behavior
Being Undetected
Criminals will decide when and where they have enough time, access, and seclusion to commit a crime without being detected. The easier it appears, the more likely a criminal will attempt to steal, vandalize, break-in, rob, or assault any isolated place or person.
Having the Opportunity
Criminals are looking for the opportunity to commit a crime. They are looking for places where there are no people around or not paying attention, low lighting or concealment, valuables in plain view, unsecured areas, unattended property, and straightforward entry and escape routes. The fewer obstacles and challenges a criminal has to face, the criminal may believe the opportunity to commit a crime and getaway is a sure thing and they will strike immediately.
Determining Value and Worth
A criminal is looking for that which is valuable to them, not necessarily what is valuable to you. What criminals determine as valuable and worth the risk of committing a crime, can be influenced by the ease and opportunity to illegally take anything of value. Criminals value property, money, power over others, harming people, and controlling people and/or their surroundings.
What You Can Do
Walk in Groups
There is safety in numbers. If possible, don't walk alone, especially when it's dark or late night hours. Feel free to call us for an escort.
Be Visible to Everyone
Stay in well-lit and heavily traveled areas as much as possible.
Walk Assured
Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace. If you feel you are being followed, walk quickly to areas where there are other people.
Dress for Success
Wear clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement. Don't burden yourself with too many items. Keep your valuables concealed.
Be Aware
Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Know as much as you can about the areas where you live, work, and attend school.
Trust Your Instincts
If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person, leave, or let someone you know.
In The Moment
Don't leave your personal belongings unattended or visible in your vehicle. If someone is trying to rob you, give up your property not your life. If someone tries to assault you, scream, yell...try to attract attention. If you witness a crime being committed, find a safe place to go, call the police.
Report
Report anything you believe to be a crime to the police as soon as possible. Try to describe the criminal. Your actions can be helpful in keeping yourself and others safe.
