HOW MANY UNITS SHOULD I TAKE THIS SEMESTER?

Most CCSF students have many responsibilities in their lives. It is important to know how to successfully manage school along with work, family, and other parts of your life.

Do you plan to be a full-time or part-time student?

  • FULL-TIME STUDENTS take 12 or more units a semester
  • PART-TIME STUDENTS take under 12 units a semester

You receive units when you complete classes. There are two types of units:

  • LECTURE UNIT: 1 unit = 1 hour of class per week
Examples include History, English or Psychology courses
  • LAB UNIT: 1 unit = 2 - 3 hours of class per week
Examples include physical education, studio art, and laboratory science courses.
A good estimate in planning your schedule is: For every hour in class, plan on spending 2 - 3 hours reading, studying, doing homework, and research outside of class.

EXAMPLES:
HISTORY 1 (lecture course) = 3 units
Class time = 3 hours in lecture class per week
Study time = 6 hours of study outside of class per week

Total Time = 9 hours per week for HISTORY 1

BIOLOGY 9 (lecture and laboratory course) = 4 units

Class time = 3 hours in lecture class per week + 3 hours in laboratory per week
Study time = 12 hours of study outside of class per week
Total Time = 18 hours per week for BIOLOGY 9

SUGGESTED SCHEDULE FOR YOUR FIRST SEMESTER

  • If you are working full-time, take 3 to 6 units (1 - 2 courses)
  • If you are working part-time, take 6 to 10 units ( 2 - 3 courses)
  • Balance class time / study time / work time / personal time
