Tips For The First Day of Class

  • Be prepared to start class on the first day of instruction. Many instructors will start lecturing on the first day of class. Have your notebook and pen, and be ready to start. A good investment is a daily calendar.

  • An instructor can drop you from class if you are not present during the first class meeting. Contact the Dean of Students Office, Conlan Hall, Room 106 (239-3555), and let the Dean know your circumstances. The Dean's Office will contact your instructors. You may use our website to reach the Chair of the department that the class is in or the instructor of the class. Go to the online Faculty/Staff Directory and type in the name of the person you wish to notify of your absence. Please note that there is no guarantee that your place will be reserved even if you notify your instructor. This is especially true in classes that are impacted.

  • Make sure to obtain a course outline for each class (a syllabus). Review it; and ask questions so you understand your responsibilities, number of absences allowed, late policy, how to make up an assignment, instructor's office hours, office location and phone number.

  • Add Period - you may add classes during the first week (usually through the second week of classes). See Add/Drop in the Class Schedule.

  • Time Management - budget your time carefully. For every hour in class, expect to spend
2-3 hours outside of class on homework.

  • When you purchase your books, save your receipts. Used books can save you a lot of money; make sure that the instructor will accept the edition of the used book you have purchased.

  • The cafeteria is not open the first few days of class because the Hotel and Restaurant (Culinary Arts and Hospitality Studies) students, who prepare and serve the food, are preparing for the semester. Bring food or buy it from temporary food coaches on campus.

  • Parking - come early and be aware that the Campus Police give tickets for cars parked illegally. Look for posted student parking areas (see college map). Even better, take MUNI.

  • If you are lost, confused or have questions, come to the Counseling Office for assistance, or ask the Peer Advisors at the Information Booth in Conlan Hall.

  • Practice finding your way around campus, and finding your way between classes. (Study the campus map.)
