Placements and Prerequisites

The purpose of the placement tests is to inform you and the counselor of the best level to begin your studies in Math, English, ESL, and other subjects.

TEST RESULTS

You may pick up your test results in the Testing Office, Conlan Hall, Room E203 or online. You will receive a computer-generated Counseling Report. It will list your placement in Math, English or ESL courses under the words "COURSE PLACEMENTS".

SAMPLE COURSE PLACEMENTS
ENGLISH English 94
MATH Math E or Business Math G, H or J
ALGEBRA Math Placement Test determines Math course placement
ESL ESL 120 (Equivalent to ESL 48)
ESL LISTENING ESL 132 (Equivalent to ESL 56)
MATH MATH 840. Take Algebra Exam for higher math.
ALGEBRA MATH 860 (Meets Math graduation requirement)

ENGLISH PLACEMENT
If you placed into: ENGL K, L, 90, 92, 93/94 or 96
For the AA/AS Degree - you must complete: ENGL94
If you placed into:ENGL 1A
For the AA/AS Degree - you must complete: ENGL 1A or Business English
70, 74 or 76

If you plan to transfer to a four-year college, you should complete ENG K > L > 90 > 92 > 93/94
96 > 1 A > 1 B or 40.

ESL PLACEMENT

ESL 110 Introductory Academic ESL (6 units)
ESL 120 Low-Intermediate Academic ESL (6 units)
ESL 130 Intermediate Academic ESL (6 units)
ESL 140 High-Intermediate Academic ESL (6 units)
ESL 150 Advanced Academic ESL (5 units)
ESL 160 High Advanced Academic ESL (4 units)
ESL 170 ESL College Reading and Composition (3 units)
ESL 112 Introductory Listening/Speaking (2 units)
ESL 122 Low-Intermediate Listening/Speaking (2 units)
ESL 132 Intermediate Listening/Speaking (2 units)
ESL 142 High-Intermediate Listening/Speaking (2 units)

To meet CCSF Graduation Requirements, complete ESL 160.

To Transfer to a four-year institution, continue with English by taking the English Placement Test and completing the English sequence to English 1A and 1B or 40.

Math EX or E1
or BSMA G, H or J
Arithmetic or Business Math (2 or 3 units)
Math 840 Beginning Algebra (3 units)
Math 860 Intermediate Algebra (3 units)
Math 90++ Advanced Algebra or Higher (3 units)

To meet CCSF graduation requirements, completion of Math 840 or placement into Math 860.

To transfer to a four-year institution, follow the recommended sequence:
A Math, Engineering, or Science major might take the following sequence of math courses:
MATH 840 - > 855 - > 860 - > 90 - > 95- > 11OA - > 11OB-110C - > 120 or 125.
A non-science major might take the following sequence of math courses:
MATH 840 - > 850 - > 860 - > 70 or 75 or 80 or ECON 5 or PHIL 12A or PSYCH 5.
