Childhood Diabetes
Explore the differences in causes, origins, and treatments between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Discuss how the diseases are managed and what a foster parent can do when caring for a child with diabetes. A brief demonstration is given on how to monitor blood sugars and give insulin via an injection. Children cannot be accommodated in the classroom.

Instructor Colette O’Brien, CPNP/CDE, a Nurse Practitioner at UCSF’s Pediatric Diabetes Clinic, is involved in patient care and research clinical trials. Colette earned a BA from UC Berkeley in Physical Education. She received her BSN from The University of San Francisco and her Master’s in nursing from The University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been practicing in the diabetes setting for the past 5 years.
