Cultural Competency in Work with Youth

An awareness of cultural diversity is important for caregivers of youth in foster care. This allows better comprehension of the differences in children’s understanding, thinking, and their ability to respond—which are all based on the culture in which the children grew up. Awareness of these differences can aid those individuals/groups helping children to understand that people of color experience a disproportionate amount of discrimination from the dominant culture because of their differences.  In many cases, the children of immigrants have been forced to assimilate faster than usual so they can fit in with the dominant culture causing children to rebel.  Interventions are necessary to help children of color overcome the difficulties of being in the foster care system.
