Description:

Learn the answer to the question: “How can we remove the systemic barriers that block children and adolescents living in out-of-home care from maintaining or reestablishing contact and relationships with those that love them?”  The “family finding” model implements extraordinary frameworks that may help us rethink what is possible in terms of improving safety, well-being, and permanency outcomes for these important youth. This workshop introduces methods for finding families of children who have “no family” and helping permanently connect children with their kin. Specific practice, experience, and strategies for locating and engaging relatives for children and adolescents living in licensed out-of-home care placements are discussed.

By the end of this workshop students should understand:

  • The damaging effects of placement instability and lack of family connection.
  • The importance of the “family finding” model.
  • The successful implementation in various programs throughout the United States.
  • Specific methods for finding family members for children who have “no family.”
  • Methods for engaging kin and safely connecting children with family.

This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Instructor(s):

Instructor Kevin A. Campbell has worked over 20 years with seniors, adults, families, and children throughout the country. Over the past 17 years he has been instrumental in developing permanency focused services for youth in the out-of-home care system. In Washington state, where Campbell first helped to develop the “family finding”  model, 253 out of 288 troubled children (many of whom had previously been deemed to have no family connections) moved in with relatives within a six-month period in 2003. He visits as many as 10 cities a week teaching child welfare professionals how to track down kin. He is a former Vice President of Strategic Planning and Service Innovation at EMQ. Prior to that he was the Director of Intensive Resources for the Family Preservation System of Catholic Community Services of Western Washington where he directed the FAST (Family Access to Stabilization and Transition) teams for CCS and several replication projects demonstrating the effectiveness of family search techniques in California and Illinois.
