Description:

This class is designed for new staff members who are unfamiliar with the impact substance abuse can have on families and children. Explore the nature of addiction, how it affects families and children, and treatment strategies with an emphasis on Harm Reduction and its role in addressing substance-related harms. 

By the end of this training, students should:
1. be able to understand addiction and the brain
2. be able to understand both abstinence-oriented and harm reduction-oriented approaches to treatment and be able to state which approach works best for which type of client.
3. have knowledge of online resources where they can obtain additional information on the topics
4. have handouts to go over with clients that address drugs and their effects from a harm reduction perspective.

To Register:
Pre-registration is required; class size is limited. This class is free to San Francisco Department of Human Services staff, staff of group homes in San Francisco, staff of SF agencies that serve foster families, and foster parents of San Francisco children in the foster care system. Pre-registration is required. For other attendees, the fee is $25 per class. Your agency or department will be billed a $25 no-show fee (per student) if a staff member does not attend and does not withdraw in advance. Another staff member may replace the registered student if necessary
