Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A can affect anyone. Good personal hygiene and proper sanitation can help prevent hepatitis A.  Vaccines are also available for long-term prevention of hepatitis A virus infection in persons 2 years of age and older.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral disease that attacks the liver and can cause jaundice, permanent liver damage, even death. The virus is spread through blood and other body fluids, and can survive for at least one month on contaminated surfaces in some circumstances. There is no cure for Hepatitis B, but it is preventable by vaccination.

The hepatitis B vaccine is given in three doses.  The second dose is given one month after the first, and the third is given five months after the second.  Students who have not had the vaccine should start the series.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus, which is found in the blood of persons who have this disease.  The infection is spread by contact with the blood of an infected person.

Hepatitis C is serious for some persons, but not for others. Most persons who get hepatitis C carry the virus for the rest of their lives.  Most of these persons have some liver damage, but many do not feel sick from the disease.  Some persons with liver damage due to hepatitis C may develop cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver and liver failure,which may take many years to develop.  There is no vaccine for the prevention of hepatits C infection.

Many peple who are at risk for hepatitis C are at risk for hepatitis A and hepatitis B.  Check with your doctor to see if you should get hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines.
