Scholarship FAQ

General Information

Scholarships are provided to City College of San Francisco students by the generosity of foundations, corporations, and individual donors.  Generally, scholarships are awarded to students with special qualifications, such as academic achievement, artistic abilities, demonstrated leadership and athletic talents, or to students who are in particular fields of study, who are from a particular heritage, who are members of underrepresented groups, or who demonstrate a financial need.

The Scholarship Office assists students in applying for scholarships that are available at City College of San Francisco.  The deadline for most City College scholarship applications is the first Friday in March.  Completed applications must be received in the Scholarship Office, Batmale Hall, Room 366 by 4:00 p.m. on that date.

It takes approximately two months for the reviewing committee to evaluate the applications and make award decisions.  Once award decisions are reached, the Scholarship Office notifies all applicants by mail of the committees' decisions.  Please note that scholarship awards are competitive and not guaranteed.  The decisions of the reviewing committees are final.  All awards advertised are based on the availability of funds.

Be Cautious of Scholarship Scams

Be careful when searching for scholarship information and don’t fall prey to fraud. Make sure information and offers are legitimate. You are cautioned against using scholarship research services that charge a fee, as they use the same resources that are available to you for free – the Internet, scholarship books, employers and social organizations, etc.

Estimates show that families lose millions of dollars to scholarship fraud every year. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, more than 350,000 people are cheated by scholarship scams each year, losing some $5 million.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions students to look for these telltale signs:

  • The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back
  • "You can’t get this information anywhere else."
  • "You’ve been selected by a 'national foundation' to receive a scholarship" or You’re a finalist" in a contest you never entered.
  • The scholarship will cost some money.
  • "We’ll do all the work."
  • "I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship."
