CCSF PERSONAL STATEMENT

Give Yourself Plenty of Time!

  1. Go over the personal statement guidelines in the application packet today and make a list of general topics and essential information to include. Pay attention to requirements of specific scholarships you will apply for. Add information to this list whenever you think of it.

  2. Write the first draft. Just get something down on paper. You'll feel better right away.

  3. Save the draft of your personal statement on a word processor. Print. Keep all drafts and notes together in a folder so you can easily find and look over, revise or add something to your personal statement at least a few minutes each day.

  4. Show your draft to a trusted friend, tutor, teacher or counselor. Make changes. Reprint.

  5. Check the guidelines again and make sure to answer all the questions. Make changes. Reprint.

  6. Read over your letters of recommendation and draft of application. Decide what to highlight in next draft of personal statement. Make changes. Reprint.

  7. Repeat step #4 as many times as is helpful. Keep all drafts and make your own decisions about what you will include.

  8. Proofread your final draft. Use spellcheck. Check for grammatical errors. Make changes. Reprint.

  9. Proofread again with ink and correction fluid. (Input changes and reprint.)

  10. Photocopy the entire scholarship application, including letters of recommendation and your personal statement.

  11. Submit completed application.
