Troubleshooting Guide

I can't connect to the CCSF Wi-Fi Network.

Scenario 1:

If you have a Wi-Fi account prior to Fall 2008, you need to sign up again. We have upgraded to a new Wi-Fi system and therefore the SSID and WPA key have been changed. Please get more details from our Sign Up home page.

Scenario 2:

If you just sign up on our new system, please allow two business days (Monday thru Thursday) to get your account set up before connecting your device to the CCSF Wi-Fi Network.

Scenario 3:

If you have signed up for more than two business days, and have followed the instructions to connect your device to the network but it is still unable to get on to the Internet, you have probably given us the wrong wireless card physical address. You can find out how to display your physical address by referring to Find Wireless Card Physical Address page, and email us at wlan@ccsf.edu about your problem.

Remember, your Wi-Fi account is authenticated by your wireless card physical address. If you give us the wrong physical address on your online sign-up form, or actually use another laptop or WiFi-enabled device than the one you signed up on the Wi-Fi network, either way will not allow you to get the Internet connection.

Scenario 4:

If you are sure you have given us the correct physical address of your wireless card, and followed the instructions but still fail to connect to the CCSF Wi-Fi Network after two business days, your laptop (Windows XP or Vista) might have a third party software that controls the wireless network configuration. Please refer to your user manual for instructions on how to connect your laptop to a wireless network.

Wireless card's error message: the network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered 5 or 13 ASCII characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.

Your wireless card only supports WEP encryption while the CCSF Wi-Fi Network is using WPA, the latest wireless encryption scheme. Unfortunately, WPA and WEP are not compatible. You may have to upgrade your wireless card.
