College Success Classes, LERN
50 and IDST 50, are offered through two departments, the Learning
Assistance Department and the Interdisciplinary Studies Department. These
exceptional courses enable students to develop confidence in their college
work by learning effective study techniques and making the most out of the
college experience. These three-unit courses are especially valuable for new
students, re-entry students, probationary students, and all students who want
to raise their GPA's and succeed in college. LERN
50 Course Outline.
LERN 51 College Success Basics.
This brief course (1 unit) introduces students to basic college success strategies:
goal setting and time management, memory and concentration, lecture notetaking,
textbook studying and test taking. LERN
51 Course Outline.
LERN 52A, B Specific Study Strategies.
This brief (.5 units each part) intensive course increases student success by
introducing study strategies particular to a targeted academic discipline, or
course or section within a discipline, or study skill area.

Upon completing this course
the student will be able to:
- Construct goal setting and time management programs.
- Evaluate memory and concentration techniques.
- Integrate lecture notetaking technique into lectures from the current
semester.
- Assess textbook study techniques and apply them to current textbooks.
- Formulate test taking strategies for both objective and essay exams
and prepare practice exams and practice exam questions.

Upon completing
this course the student will be able to:
- Analyze study strategies necessary to master a targeted course of
study.
- Discuss the study strategies in active, collaborative small group
sessions.
- Integrate the study strategies into a study plan appropriate for that
student ans his or her particular course of study.
