Who is Involved? There are thousands of people with disabilities at City College of San Francisco. They are students, faculty, and staff. Their disabilities include impairments in mobility, vision, hearing, and speech; and less obvious problems such as learning disabilities, psychological disorders, and developmental disabilities. There are also individuals who experience other functional limitations as a result of an acquired brain impairment or other health problems such as arthritis, diabetes, seizure, cardiac disorders, and so on. If you are a student with a disability, your involvement with the Disabled Student Programs and Services can be thought of as a partnership between you and the DSPS staff. The DSPS staff consists of faculty members, counselors, disability specialists, technology and media specialists, instructional assistants, interpreters, and office staff. They are people you can work with to plan support services that will help you move toward your goals. Our counselors have specific expertise in disabilities, including disability entitlements. These entitlements include accommodations, which are designed to give students an equal opportunity in the college setting (e.g., extended time for tests, and a quiet testing environment). After verifying a student's disability, the counselor will recommend appropriate accommodations. Counselors also help students identify their academic/career goals and develop necessary coping strategies. Besides English, counseling is provided in three other languages: Chinese, Spanish, and American Sign Language. The DSPS staff includes several full-time and part-time counselors, instructors, classified staff, and student workers. Many of our instructors have professional licenses in special areas including speech pathology, audiology, learning disabilities, psychology and exercise physiology. We look forward to working with you and helping you to reach your educational goals.
