About DSPSDisabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) offers supportive services for students with a wide range of disabilities. Emphasis is given to those services which allow the student with disabilities to fully participate in all regular academic and vocational programs. DSPS offers support services and specialized classes for more than 2,000 students at City College of San Francisco. This large enrollment is attributable to the growing awareness of disability access laws. In particular, the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are federal laws which have markedly improved the lives of persons with disabilities and have made access to higher education a reality for many students. City College has experienced a significant increase in DSPS students and we anticipate this trend to continue. Students who may qualify for services are: blind/visually impaired, deaf/hearing impaired, learning disabled, physically disabled, speech disabled, persons with an acquired brain injury, developmentally delayed learners or those with other medical conditions. Specific classes for skill development and learning strategies are available at both the Ocean Campus and the John Adams Campus. DSPS assists in arranging academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids such as: priority registration; specialized test arrangements; notetaker arrangements; academic, personal, and employment counseling; sign language interpreters; Braille, e-text and print enlargement; adaptive furniture and equipment; and referral to campus and community resources. Referrals for students with disabilities on the Ocean Campus may be made to the DSPS counselor on that campus. Referrals for students enrolled at any other campuses should be made to the DSPS counselor at the John Adams Campus. Due to specific state and federal guidelines, a student may be required to provide medical and/or professional verification of her/his disability in order to receive special academic adjustments and auxiliary aids. Services, programs and entry criteria may vary for credit and non-credit classes. Placement decisions are made on a case by case basis depending on the needs of the individual student. Some services are very specialized in that they are designed to meet the needs of a particular disability group. Other services, such as the High Tech Center Computer lab and Counseling, work with all disability groups. Students may be enrolled in credit and non-credit classes simultaneously.
