The AAAP prepares students to successfully complete English 92, 94 and 1A. All students who enroll in AAAP are required to take Library Orientation 10. The African American and Latino Retention Programs are innovative cooperative projects of CCSF and the San Francisco Unified School District. The programs are designed to prevent high school drop-out among-at-risk young people and to provide opportunities and incentives to go to college. Instruction is designed to prepare young people with the skills and knowledge to help them stay in high school and to go on to college. Athletic counseling provides academic, career, educational planning and personal counseling to men and women students who are members of City College's intercollegiate athletic teams. For more information, call the General Counseling Department on the Phelan Campus.
Educational, career and personal counseling is provided on the Phelan Campus with evening counseling also provided at the Castro/Valencia Campus (Everett Middle School, 450 Church Street). Informational workshops on various topics which are important to gay, lesbian and bisexual students are offered at the Castro/Valencia Campus during the evenings. Specialized counseling services are available for International Students. Counselors assist International Students with their academic, career and personal issues. Additionally, counselors can assist students in resolving other problems of adjustment to college life and life in the United States. The Center offers bilingual (Spanish), bicultural counseling services to students. Services include bilingual college orientation, assistance with financial aid, graduation, certificate and transfer information, academic and career counseling, referrals to campus and community services, bilingual support, and bilingual peer advisors.
Math Bridge is a one year long program beginning each fall semester to help students complete elementary algebra and geometry successfully. Group and individual counseling,tutoring, and other activities supplement the traditional math course work. Students also learn to develop skills that will be useful in other college courses.
Math Bridge is not a remedial program. The goal of the program is to help student successfully complete mathematics prerequisites offered at City College in order to increase the number of transfers to 4-year colleges and universities. Puente (which means bridge in Spanish) is a one year writing/counseling mentoring program. Puente integrates the skills of an English instructor, a Mexican American/Latino counselor and Mexican American/Latino mentors into a team structure. Puente students enroll in two English courses: English 96 in the Spring and English 1A in the Fall. The Re-entry to Education program acknowledges the growing number of adults actively changing their lives through the educational process. Whether one is seeking to enhance his/her knowledge learn new job skills, or prepare for a professional career, the Reentry to Education program seeks to ease the transition for the re-entry students return to college. Re-entry to Education provides the following services to both prospective and currently enrolled students: professional counseling for personal, crisis, academic and vocational concerns;information on transfer to 4-year universities and colleges; for assistance with completing forms and referrals to campus and community resources. Workshops and support groups are held to assist students in adjusting to college expectations; to discuss issues such as career-/life planning, study skills, goal setting, time management, financial aid, final examination preparations and stress management. The Transfer Center provides information to students who wish to transfer to a 4-year college or university by completing the lower division (1 and 2 years of college) at City College. Transfer opportunities are available to the University of California (UC), the California State University System (CSU) and private universities and colleges. The center has a library of college catalogs and information about course transfers and requirements for transfer. Transfer Center workshops include general transfer information; transfer information for specific campuses of the University of California and the California State Universities; application procedures; guaranteed admissions programs and tips for writing application essays. The Transfer Center has a monthly calendar which lists workshops, visits from university and college representatives and transfer days for public and private universities and colleges.
