Defining Academic Probation
There are two types of probation: Academic and Progress Probation
Academic Probation
Total CCSF G.P.A. below 2.0
This does not include coursework from other colleges.
This is based on ALL classes completed at CCSF since the date of your first semester of enrollment.
Questions About Academic Probation:
1. "What is a grade point average?"
Numerical point values are assigned for each letter grade you earn. The total points are averaged together to obtain a total grade point average.
Your report card will show your semester grade point average AND your total grade point average for work completed at CCSF.
2. "I was on Academic Probation but I got a 2.0 G.P.A. last semester. Why am I still on Probation?"
Congratulations for having a good semester! You are on your way to getting off probation.
However, your semester G.P.A. hasnt raised your total G.P.A. to a 2.0 or above. Probation status is based on your total G.P.A.
3. "So how do I find out what my grade point average is if I lost my report card from my last semester?"
Your campus Admissions and Records or Counseling Office can supply you with a print-out of your grades and total G.P.A.
Defining Progress Probation
Progress Probation
Your G.P.A. may be good but you received "Ws," "INCs" and "NCs" for 50% or more of all classes in which you enrolled in at CCSF.
Receiving too many "Ws" is the most common reason why students find themselves on Progress Probation.
For more information about "W's," "INC's" and "NC's" mean, please refer to your CCSF catalog.
Progress Probation Example:
Carmen enrolled in 11 units during her first semester at CCSF.
SUBJECT GRADE ENROLLED UNITS Math 95 B 3 Bio 9 INC 4 P.E 558 NC 1 ENGLISH 94 W 3 Total Semester G.P.A. 3.0
Questions about Carmens first semester:
1) How many units did Carmen enroll in?
2) How many units of letter grades did Carmen receive (letter grades=grades A-F)?
3) Did Carmen receive letter grades in 50% or more of the total number of units in which she enrolled?
4) Is Carmen on Progress Probation?
Yes,
Carmen started out the semester enrolling in 11 units. However, at the end of the semester, she had only completed three units o course work with a letter grade. (The "B" grade she earned in Math 95 is the only letter grade she received.)
She completed 8 units of courses with final grades of "W," "INC" and "NC" notations.
Therefore, she completed less than 50% of her classes with letter grades and, she has been placed on Progress Probation.
From this example, you can see that even though Carmen has a good grade point average (3.0), she is on Progress Probation because of earning too many "W's," "INC's" and "NC's."
