Wine Fundamentals Certificate Levels 1 & 2

Tuition is $1,500 for both Level 1 and Level 2 Certificates, begins September 14 running once a week on Mondays from 3pm-9:30pm for 12 weeks. which includes textbooks, wines for tasting, examination and all materials.
The classes will be held at the Downtown Campus of City College (88 Fourth Street at Mission).

Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 1 (WFCL1) 24 clock hours
- A 4 week introductory seminar course designed for the novice wine enthusiast. Whether pursuing a career in hospitality or enhancing your enjoyment of wines, the Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 1 curriculum provides an introduction to the basic aspects of sensory evaluation that are frequently overlooked when drinking wine. The student will learn the different components of wine appearance, aroma, and flavor and will also learn the basics in wine terminology. This course offers a basic understanding of the major grapes used for making wine and their discerning characteristics.
- Upon completion of this course students will have learned some basic wine terminology, understanding label information, rudimentary service techniques as well as some food and wine pairing theories. The goal is for the student to gain an appreciation for all types of wines and feel comfortable and confident when selecting and buying wine.
- The course runs over the course of a full 6 clock hours per day offered one day per week for a total of 4 weeks. There is a concluding 1.25 hour exam.
- When you register for WFCL1 you are automatically enrolled in WFCL2 as the courses are offered sequentially.
- The Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 1 is mandatory for entrance into the ISG Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 2.

Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 2 (WFCL2) 48 clock hours
- An 8 week seminar course designed to build on your learning from the Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 1. The student will be exposed to all elements involved in the wine business including viticulture, vinification, and regional laws. The student will begin to develop his blind tasting skills by studying old and new world wine regions as well as sparkling and fortified wines. In addition, he will build on his service skills, food and wine pairing techniques, and proper storage practices. The goal of this course is to advance his understanding of wine and wine making in order to prepare him for the Sommelier Diploma Program.
- The course runs over the course of a full 6 clock hours per day offered one day per week for a total of 8 weeks. There is a concluding 3.5 hour exam.
- The Wine Fundamentals Certificate Level 2 is mandatory for entrance into the Sommelier Diploma Program.

Upon successful completion of Level 1 and 2 Certificates, the student may then choose to enroll for the ISG Sommelier Diploma Program.

Sommelier Diploma Program
The program is an intensive six-month course held once a week for eight clock hours. The International Sommelier Guild is the only professional body that accredits Sommeliers by direct instruction. It begins October 7 running once a week on Wednesdays, from 8:30am - 4:30pm for 22 weeks. The classes will be held at the Downtown Campus of City College (88 Fourth Street at Mission).

Industry experts lead all of our lectures. The curriculum covers everything from viticulture, vinification, tasting techniques, cellaring, investment strategy, menu design, and regional analysis of wines, spirits, and ales. To ensure that your learning experience is second to none, we hold an annual conference to guarantee that each and every instructor has the latest information, research and development, new theories on food and wine pairing, and current trends in the market place. As a graduate, you will enter the industry informed and sought after.
This degree is aimed at being the defining benchmark for wine knowledge within the hospitality industry. Upon successful completion of the Sommelier Diploma Program, you will graduate with a diploma that designates you as a leader in wine industry with professional mobility.

Applicants must complete an application form which can be done online.

Upon receipt of the application electronic form, an email notification is sent out advising that the form has been received.

Applications of qualified candidates will be dated in the order of their being received at the International Sommelier Guild offices and will be processed in chronological order. A maximum of 24 students will be accepted per class. A letter of acceptance is issued to those candidates specifying room number, confirming dates and times of the course, a list of what the applicant is required to bring for the first day of class.
