GIS Theory & Practice
Register Now
GIS is short for Geographic Information Systems and is a system and approach for studying the world around us by integrating hardware, software, people, procedures and digital geographic data. In this meeting, you will be introduced to the wide variety of geospatial-related learning opportunities available through City College of San Francisco's GIS Education Center. You will have a chance to meet the program’s instructors, to ask questions about GIS as a problem-solving and analytical tool in a wide variety of location-focused disciplines, to learn about job and salary prospects, and to consider theoretical and practical approaches to building geospatial literacy.

Healthy Planning using GIS
Class #: TM105 Register Now
This workshop is an introduction to using GIS in health impact assessment (HIA) to inform policy and plan decision making, addressing public health issues. The following three HIA tools will be explored over the course: Healthy Development Measurement Tool (HDMT), Pedestrian Environmental Quality Index (PEQI), and the Neighborhood Completeness Indicator (NCI).

GIS Quick Start
Class #: TM106 Register Now
The
introduction workshop is designed for students with little or no GIS
skills and for those interested in gaining basic knowledge of
Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students will learn the
foundation of desktop GIS by exploring concepts and techniques using
state-of-the-art and widely used ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.3.1.

GIS and the Urban Environment
Class #: TM112 Register Now
This
workshop is designed for those students interested in the application
of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to the study of
complex urban environments. Fundamentally, the workshop will provide
(1) an overview of the myriad ways in which GIS is being used today to
analyze geospatial data pertaining to urban settings and (2) approaches
to solving multi-faceted urban problems. Students will explore GIS
concepts and applications using state-of-the-art software, ESRI’s
ArcGIS 9.3. No prior experience with ArcGIS is required and a portion
of the first class session will be devoted to an overview of GIS.

Geodatabases
Class #: TM111 Register Now
Geodatabases are a relatively new file format for organizing and sharing geospatial data in ArcGIS, and offer many advantages over ESRI's standard shapefile format. This workshop is designed to provide an understanding of concepts and advantages related to Geodatabases within ESRI’s ArcGIS, as well as the steps needed to design and create them. Exercises will focus on construction of Geodatabases, data population, and understanding the rules that govern topology and connectivity.

Analysis using Geoprocessing & ModelBuilder
Class #: TM114 Register Now
This is an introductory workshop to creating a basic
Google Maps application. Google Maps are widely used to "mash"
disparate datasets and display this information on a map over the web.
Students will learn how to create a Google Map to display basic
location information Topics progress from quick and dirty maps to
developing maps with sidebars and loading data from files. In addition,
topics will cover how to customize certain aspects of the map such as
behavior, navigation, markers, and info windows.

GIS Quick Start - Advanced
Class #: TM107 Register Now
This
workshop is designed for those students interested in gaining
intermediate to advanced-level skills in the use of ArcGIS 9.3.
The format will be a combination of lecture and hands-on exercises,
during which students will explore GIS concepts and applications.
The primary objective of the workshop is for students to acquire a set
of skills sought by today's employers. In so doing, students will
use real-world vector and raster geospatial data from a variety of
sources, including the City and County of San Francisco.

Information Design with Maps
Class #: TM110 Register Now
The
powerful and affordable GIS software available today enables a
cartographer to incorporate vast amounts of geospatial data for the
production of detailed maps. These maps may serve a variety of purposes
including the simple display of quantitative data, as tools for
educational purposes and as a component of advocacy efforts. While GIS
software makes the production of these maps a fairly simple task, the
GIS practioner must balance the science of GIS with the artistry of
information design.
